Battery Storage FAQs
How Much Solar Battery Storage Do I Need?
To save money, you’ll need enough solar panel battery storage to cover all your energy usage whilst your solar panels aren’t producing power.
The average home will use around 8kWh of electricity on an average day. To put this into more perspective, the capacity of a lithium-ion battery will range between 1kWh and 15kWh.
Ideally, you want a battery that covers your evening and night-time usage, ready to charge up again in the daytime. You’ll also need to know how much energy your solar panels can generate, as there is no point in buying a battery that is too big for your solar panels to fill.
Ensuring that you have a well-chosen battery to suit your home’s energy use and the output of your solar panels, you’ll find you have enough electricity to serve your needs for most of the year.
Should you have any questions on how much solar battery storage you need, our experts will be more than happy to give you all the information required.
How Long Can Batteries Store Solar Energy?
Whilst this will differ across various battery types, a standard solar battery will, on average, store energy for one to five days.
Where Should Solar Batteries Be Stored?
Finding where to store your solar batteries is similar to finding a location for a new boiler. Most homeowners will install batteries in their garage, loft space, cupboard or cabinet. Essentially, somewhere neatly out of the way.
Thanks to modern technology, solar batteries are slim, sleek and lightweight. Therefore, they can be left stand-alone, should you wish, or easily be tucked away mounted to a wall.
Will A Solar Panel Battery Work With My Existing Panels?
Yes, if you already have solar panels, we’ll be able to supply and fit a battery to your existing system.
Will I Lose My Feed-In-Tariff Payments From My Solar Panels If I Install A Solar Battery?
If you are currently receiving feed-in-tariff (FiT) payments for the electricity that your solar panels generate, they will not be affected by your new battery system. Whilst the FiT scheme ended in 2019, any existing qualifying homes won’t lose their payments for the contract term, typically 20 years from installation, if they install a solar battery system.
Do Home Solar Batteries Come With Warranties?
All major manufacturers of these solar battery systems offer a warranty, typically up to 10 years. Should the solar battery you choose come with any caveats or restrictions on the warranty terms, here at Three Counties Solar, we’ll ensure that you are aware of this and completely comfortable with this.
Can I Install A Home Storage Battery Even If I Don’t Have Solar Panels?
Most people choose to have a home solar storage battery to help make the most of their solar panel system. However, it can be possible to install some home battery systems in households without a solar array.
Rather than charging the battery system with solar energy, you can power it with cheaper electricity overnight from the grid and use it during peak times to not pay for peak-rate power. Doing this can help you make savings on your energy bills.
How Long Does a Home Battery Last?
As mentioned above, a home storage battery will likely come with a manufacturer warranty of 10 years. Therefore you will be covered if you have problems within the first ten years of ownership. More often than not, a home battery will keep working for 15 years or more.
